What do you think of when you hear the term hypothyroidism diet? Do you think it’s just about eating your vegetables and taking your supplements? While that may be part of it, there’s much more to getting well than simply putting good food in your body. You need to heal your gut, and that means eliminating toxic foods and exploring other ways to boost your immunity as well. Here are three tips on how to help you get started with healing your hypothyroidism diet.
1) Tip 1 – Get rid of trigger foods
The first tip that I always give my clients is the rule of thumb you need to get rid of all trigger foods. No matter how much weight you’ve lost or how much your symptoms have improved, if certain foods make you worse, you must stop eating them for good.
2) Tip 2 – Eat fermented foods
Probiotics are living organisms, so the best way to get them is by eating fermented foods such as organic kimchi, sauerkraut, yogurt, or kefir. The fermentation process creates beneficial compounds that are good for your gut. Fermented foods help replenish your gut's natural bacterial balance, which can also help fight off colds or infections by boosting your immune system. Look for these products in the refrigerated section of grocery stores or health food stores.
3) Tip 3 – Take probiotics and digestive enzymes
Hypothyroidism can lead to digestive issues, including gut dysbiosis or small intestinal bacterial overgrowth (SIBO). These conditions are the result of chronic inflammation in the lining of the stomach or intestines, which can impair digestion. To reverse these symptoms, you will need to heal your gut through probiotics and digestive enzymes. If you have chronic yeast overgrowth, this may require prescription drugs as well.
